{Dec 5} Alfie makes risengrod (rice porridge)

Best part of the days spent at the Christmas Elf center was being part of the cooking team of the day. Each day 2 elves were chosen to help, learn and make a dish. Today they would make the best rice porridge ever! It involves some patience, rice is cooked in milk and must not burn. You must mix slowly with a wooden spoon and sing “Det er risengrod, der gor maven blod..”.. and old folk song every child should learn to sing.

here are the ingredients.

Makes 4 portions

  • 3 cups water
  • 180 g rice (i use Egyptian rice, the grain is white, thick and a bit rounded)
  • 1 liter milk
  • ¼ tsp thick salt
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 50 g butter

How to make

Cook water and rice in a thick bottomed pot . Let the rice simmer for 2 minutes, while stirring regularly with a wooden spoon. Then add the milk and bring it to a boil.  Lower the heat, keep mixing for 10 more minutes, (never leave the rice unattended, it burns quickly because of the milk). Cover the pot with a lid and cook for 25 minutes.  Stir frequently in the porridge. Check if the consistency is  fine, if the porridge is too liquid, cook 5 minutes without lid.

Add salt and taste.

Serve in a bowl, sprinkle with cinammon sugar and add a spoon butter. Eat immediately!

Enjoy this porridge when it is cold outside! Children and grown ups will love it. It is a really comforting dish!
